Doris Viola Lemberger is our July Veteran Spouse Spotlight! Doris was married to her late husband, Willard Lemberger, for 58 years.
Willard entered the Army on February 27,1943 at the age of 19 years old. After basic training, he became a truck driver and ammunition carrier. He served as a vehicle driver with infantry weapons in the European Theater of Operations.
Willard received an arm wound in combat in northern France in December of 1944 during the Battle of the Bulge. He was sent to Percy Jones Hospital Center in Fort Custer, Michigan. While on leave in March, 1945, Willard married the love of his life, Doris. He had a cast on his left arm on their wedding day.
Willard was discharged from the service July 21, 1945. He received a Purple Heart, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, two bronze stars, Good Conduct Ribbon, Combat Infantry Badge and Distinguished Unit Badge.
Willard and Doris were happily married for 58 years. They had two children and four grandchildren. Willard passed away in December, 2003 at the age of 80 years old.
Doris is looking forward to her 91st birthday in October. She is currently living in the home they purchased in 1957 and is in need of some daily care and assistance. The VA benefits recently awarded to her have been a real blessing in assisting her with her daily care. She is thrilled to be able to stay in her home of 60 years. She is very appreciative of the additional funding used to assist her with her daily care.
In her spare time, Doris loves gardening and has flowers all over her yard! She loves going out to lunch, shopping, and watching T.V. She also enjoys visiting with her wonderful caregivers.
Willard, thank you for your service and Doris, thank you for your story!
